Marvin is a young boy, abused by his family,
undergoing mockery and sexual aggression by his peers.
Finding salvation Marvin Bijou runs away. Changes his name to Martin Clément. He has fled his small village in the Vosges Mountains, escaping his family - his father’s tyranny and his mother’s resignation; intolerance and rejection, the bullying he suffered from being singled out as "different". Against all odds, he somehow manages to find allies: first, Madeleine Clément, the middle school principal who introduces him to theater and whose name he later adopts as a symbol of his salvation. And then, Abel Pinto, his mentor and role model, who will encourage him to tell his story. Marvin, who becomes Martin, will risk everything to create a show that represents so much more than success; it's his path to reinvention in the artistic expression.
A compelling and searing chronicle of a young gay man leaving the life he has known in order to become someone else. Like her previous film The Innocents (LFF2016), Reinventing Marvin showcases director Anne Fontaine’s skill at balancing complex subject matter with social relevance. Marvin Bijou (rising French star Finnegan Oldfield), a young boy from a working-class family in a small French village, suffers constant bullying at school and home for being ‘different’ – too sensitive and too feminine. A chance encounter with a drama teacher opens the doors to a world that offers him the chance to escape his situation. Following Marvin into his mid-twenties as a theatre student in Paris, Fontaine presents a richly layered tale about identity building and transformation. With an exquisite cameo from Isabelle Huppert and great performances from the reliably excellent Vincent Macaigne & Charles Berling, Reinventing Marvin packs a powerful punch --BFI-FLARE-MARVIN.
