A gorgeously-directed, tender drama about two hunky Israeli soldiers who fall in love while serving in a remote military outpost – one of the most emotionally moving gay films of 2003.
Originally produced for Israeli cable TV, Yossi & Jagger ended up a theatrical box office smash at home. The film takes place at a remote army base on the Israeli-Lebanese border. Commanders Yossi (Ohad Knoller) and Jagger (Yehuda Levi, one of Israel’s biggest heartthrobs) are in love - but clandestinely so. Their intensely romantic connection is unknown to almost all of the base’s other occupants and visitors, including Ya’eli (Aya Steinovitz), a sweet female soldier fostering a massive crush on Jagger.
As a call to arms grows imminent, so do tensions in their relationship. Open-minded Jagger, about to finish his tour of duty, wants the discretion-obsessed Yossi to quit the army and live openly with him. But can they even survive the evening’s ambush? Although gays have been allowed to serve in the Israeli military since 1985, the film illustrates how homophobia still manages to permeate society on all levels. Based on a true story, Yossi & Jagger features a stirring, heart-wrenching climax and has some brilliantly-drawn supporting characters. You won’t find a tighter, more affecting love story this year.
